Limit breaks, upgrades and duplicates

Updated 16 Oct 2026

What a limit break does

At level 80 a ★4 or better unit has hit its level cap. A limit break raises the cap by 5 levels, up to four times: 80 to 85, 90, 95 and finally 100. Each limit break also opens more of the unit's Attribute Matrix, and some units unlock extra skill slots with it.

Limit breaks happen in the Attribute Matrix, at the limit break nodes on its outer edge.

What it costs

UnitCost of each limit break
★450 Holy Hacking Crystals
★5100 Holy Hacking Crystals
★6One of: 100 Sacred Hacking Crystals of the unit's element, 100 Almighty Sacred Hacking Crystals, or (once per unit) 100 Holy Hacking Crystals

You get Holy Hacking Crystals from duplicate ★2 to ★5 units in scouts: a duplicate ★4 gives 50 and a duplicate ★5 gives 100, exactly one limit break. A duplicate ★6 gives 100 Sacred Hacking Crystals of its element. Sacred and Almighty Sacred Hacking Crystals also come from event rewards.

Save your Holy Hacking Crystals early. You pick them up quickly from ★2 and ★3 duplicates, and they are worth far more on a ★5 you love than spread over early units.

Some special units use their own crystals instead (for example the nightwear units and Medal Scout units).

Choosing a direction

After a limit break you choose a direction for the new growth nodes:

  • Attack: Attack and Critical,
  • HP / Defense: HP and Defense,
  • MP: MP.

You can change it later; changing it also costs Hacking Crystals.

Upgrading ★4 to ★5

Many ★4 units can be upgraded to ★5 with 10 Upgrade Crystals. The upgrade raises the rarity, the stats and the cost in your party. Units from special events use their own upgrade crystals, such as a Halloween Upgrade Crystal. A unit's page in Units shows whether it can be upgraded.

On MD:Rebirth

Limit breaks, and the growth they open in the Attribute Matrix, are not open yet on MD:Rebirth. Units stop at level 80 for now. When limit breaks open, a unit's limit breaks and its ★5 upgrade come some time after the unit itself, never on its release day.
