Getting started

User rank, parties and friends

Updated 16 Oct 2026

User rank

You earn rank EXP every time you clear a quest. Clearing with rank S gives 20% more. When the bar fills, your user rank goes up and you get:

  • a higher party cost limit, so you can field rarer units together,
  • room for more friends (up to 100),
  • one-time rank missions with Memory Diamonds and Decryption Keys (collect them under Missions).

Rank only goes up; it never drops. There is no stamina in Memory Defrag, so a higher rank does not refill anything. You can play as much as you like at any rank.

Later story quests give the most rank EXP. Players used to replay the final SAO bosses (Skull Reaper and Heathcliff, chapters 13 and 14 in Quests) for fast rank EXP.

Parties and party cost

A party holds up to three units who fight in the quest, and you switch between them in battle. Each unit has a cost: the rarer the unit, the higher the cost (★4 units cost 12, ★5 cost 15, ★6 cost 18 for most units). Your party's total cost must stay under your rank's limit.

Early on you may not be able to field three ★4 units at once. A few ranks of story play fix that.

On MD:Rebirth the cost limit is 20 plus your rank (rank 4 = 24, rank 20 = 40). The original game's exact table was never recorded, so this is our closest match to what players reported; it may be adjusted.

You can save several parties and pick one before each quest. Some characters can also bring an Assistance Character that does not count toward the cost; see Sword skills and switching.

Supporters and friends

At the start of a quest you can pick a Supporter: another player's unit that fights alongside you. Friends appear first in the Supporter list. One daily mission asks you to clear a quest with a Supporter.

FollowingPlayers you added
FollowerPlayers who added you
FriendBoth: you follow each other

Your user rank sets how many players you can follow, up to 100.

Supporters cannot be used in co-op quests. Co-op, the PvP arena and guilds are open; see Co-op, PvP, Supporters and guilds.

Your name, comment and title

  • Name: up to 10 characters. Change it under Menu > Status > Edit User Info, or press and hold your character in town.
  • Comment: a short line other players see in town and in quests. Change it in the same place.
  • Title: a badge you earn from hard missions. Some titles carry a battle skill; you choose one title to show and one title for its effect. Titles may not be available on MD:Rebirth yet.

Keep names and comments friendly. Rude words are filtered.

Data transfer: keep your account safe

Your account lives on the MD:Rebirth server, linked to your device. Set up a transfer code now so you can move to a new phone or recover after reinstalling.

  1. Open Menu > Other > Data Transfer.
  2. Write down your transfer ID.
  3. Set a password (8 to 32 letters and numbers).

To load your account on another device: on the title screen tap Support > Transfer Data, then enter the ID and password.

Keep the password private. After moving to a new device, set a new password so the old one cannot be used.
